Fly Fishing Day

Fly Fishing Day

Duración: 9 Horas

Exploring Patagonia in Argentina is not just about taking in breathtaking landscapes; it's also about immersing yourself in the local passions. Therefore, don't miss the chance to engage in one of the most cherished and traditional activities in the southern hemisphere: Fly Fishing.
Departing from El Calafate, you will journey to some of the most bountiful fishing environments, including Lagos Roca, Argentino, and Rico, as well as the Santa Cruz and Pelque Rivers. Here, you'll have the opportunity to experience this genuine and artisanal sport, with wading as the primary technique.
Equipped with a rod and an artificial lure, known as a fly, and guided by seasoned experts, you will have the chance to catch (and release) the area's most plentiful species, from Rainbow Trout, Trucha de Lago or Bocón, El Fontinalis or Trucha de Manantial, to the star of the region, the Chinook Salmon, a prized trophy among Patagonian anglers.
You can opt for a full day with lunch included or a half day with a snack.

Descripción del Tour:

Begin your morning with an early start as you're picked up from your hotel at 08:30 am. Accompanied by expert guides, you'll head to some of the most sought-after spots for the sport. The chosen location will be determined exclusively by weather conditions and will not impact the success of your fishing adventure. You might explore the following areas:
* LAKE ARGENTINO: Famous for its vast size, which touches the shores of El Calafate. The prime fishing location is Punta del Lago, a spacious bay where Rainbow Trout and Lake Trout are abundant, with the latter being the main attraction due to their impressive size. Although strong winds often prevail in this area, making fly fishing challenging, the guides are equipped to counteract the winds and ensure a successful day. Large, shiny flies such as Woolly Bugger or Zonker in purple or black with red and yellow accents, and rods 6, 7, or 8, are recommended.
* ROCA LAKE: A smaller lake with clear waters where various sizes of fish can be caught. The most prevalent species is the Rainbow Trout, which becomes the focal point during summer due to its size and agility. This setting is ideal for fishing with No. 6 rods and Wet Tip or fast-sinking lines for deeper spots. Common flies include black Woolly Bugger, Zonker, Matuka, in shades of black, olive, brown, and nymph hues, with the Prince fly with a large head being notable.
* LAKE STROBEL: Despite its challenging access, this lake offers immense satisfaction with its plentiful Rainbow Trout and Portes, weighing between 3 and 7 kilos each. This is one of the most stunning areas for the sport, requiring heavy gear with 7 to 8 sinking lines and large, vivid flies.
* RÍO PELQUE: This river features clear waters with a gentle slope, making it a delightful place to fish for Brown and Fontinalis with fish weighing from 300 gr to 2 kg. Río Pelque is perfect for light equipment, using rods 2 to 5 and black Woolly Bugger flies.

* RÍO SANTA CRUZ: As the most significant and powerful river in Santa Cruz province, fishing in its upper section is rewarding due to the abundance of Canadian Trout and Smallmouth Perch. At the river's mouth, Steelheads of substantial size, averaging between 3 and 6 kilograms, are common. The equipment required includes heavy rigs with 8 or 9 rods and a sturdy butt at least 9 feet long, ensuring the reel has an excellent brake. Popular flies are large and weighted streamers, with Rabbits, Woolly Bugger, and Zonker types being suitable. Color choices range from purple to black with shimmering highlights.

This river remains largely unexplored; it's believed that only a third of its course is frequented by local anglers.

* RÍO CATERINA: Nestled in the Lake Argentino basin, this is the favored spot for catching Chinook Salmon, a species that challenges anglers as they ascend the river for spawning while refraining from feeding. However, the guides have studied their behavior and have successfully used traditional fly fishing techniques to catch several specimens.
You'll use large, articulated flies in bright colors (fluorine green, oranges, etc.), with rods 7 to 8, sinking lines, and a lot of patience. Once the Salmon takes the fly, expect an intense struggle; holding onto these powerful fish is no easy feat, so ensure you have good backing on the reel and at least one tippet.

Throughout your fishing day, in any selected environment, the guide will be at your service at all times. You will receive instructions on basic concepts and movements, equipment use, fly assembly, rod selection, etc., with practice tailored to your experience level.

Fishing will always be done wading, meaning you'll walk along the river or lake banks. You'll move effortlessly through the cold waters, thanks to the gear provided by the guide: waders and boots with non-slip felt soles (some boots also feature nails for better grip).

Choose between the full-day shift, which includes 10 hours of sport fishing with a midday break to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch by the selected river or lake, or opt for a half-day session with 6 hours of fishing and a snack. For this option, you can depart in the morning at 08:30 am or in the afternoon at 2:30 pm.

In Argentine Patagonia, all Fly Fishing is catch and release, ensuring the enjoyment of the sport while preserving the area's native species.

The service concludes with your return to your hotel in El Calafate.
